This is exactly the type of positive action we need to leverage the chaos and dysfunction inside the health system right now. A beautiful job of seizing the moment and leading the change we can all live with!

I saw an article about the PHNIX initiative, that included Katelyn Jetelina in either the NYT or a Southern California newspaper yesterday, so this is getting positive press! Congratulations!

BTW, when I spelled "Jetelina" my auto correct wanted to change it to "Jetliner"! Ready for takeoff YLE!!! 😁

HAHA Jetliner! I like that

Welcome aboard everyone. On behalf of all people, we hope you enjoy today's flight.

"Anytown Tower, PHNIX 2026, holding short Runway 9 right, ready for departure."

"PHNIX 2026, you are cleared for takeoff, runway 9 right, have a safe trip." Godspeed PHNIX 2026!✨🛫

Congrats! You give us all so much information; and you give me hope.

thank you for designing a better way and protecting the honesty of science. You rock!

You are such a better person than I am! I know you are right but it gets exhausting wading through peoples misinformation. Folks who could barely pass high school biology are now doing their own”research” and lecturing to me and others about science. (Well, I did go to medical school but sure give me your lecture.!)You have inspired me to be better! Well, maybe except one person….

Katelyn Jetelina's avatar

Haha I think I know who that one person is. It's REALLY hard and it's incredibly exhausting. It's also improtant to push back. Don't get me wrong. But it's also a game of whack a mole and a losing battle given the alogthrms. There are some things we are doing to get creative about it, but it seems like we are trying to stop a hurricine. I think instead we need to figure out how to help people prepare for the hurricaine by boarding windows, preparation, navigation, clarity, etc.

Peter, that IS the problem YLE is trying to overcome. That attitude, "I went to medical school so I know everything", turns patients off and drives them into the arms of the quacks. Biology and medicine are huge fields of study and change daily. There is no way any one human can know everything, about everything. And what medical schools don't teach (or if they do, you all slept through it) if the interconnection of all parts of the body. Specialists in one organ system have little idea of how other systems interact with theirs. It's getting better, slowly, but we have a long ways to go. Add on to that the interaction of nutrition and environmental factors and even the PCPs are overwhelmed. No one expects DRs to know everything. But, and it's a HUGE but, when DRs think they are experts, it comes across in their behavior, like your comment. Every individual has a different genetic makeup, even twins. So what you think will heal people based on your past experience may not work for me. When you dismiss me, when I try and explain my own body and experience to you, by thinking I'm "lecturing" you, (your perception, I'm just trying to explain so I can get better care), not only do you not help me but you lose me as a patient, get a poor write up on DR review websites and miss out on the opportunity to learn something new that might help the next patient. People using AI get a non-biased, fact based evaluation of potential causes and treatments. We come to you for your experience, hopefully coupled with compassion, and the hope to feel better. Don't let us down by feeling threatened by our knowledge and AI and projecting the "I am God" attitude patients so despise.

PS. I'm sure you do have to listen to the nonsense people are fed by quacks but as YLE has so ably explained in other posts, make a connection first so the patient will be more willing to trust you and then offer to help instead of telling them what to do. You'll be a lot less frustrated. Lecture over. ;-) An educated, frustrated, chronic multiple illness sufferer.

Understood and I agree. Sorry, was just trying to interject a bit self-deprecating levity. I actually thought of putting in an emoji to make that more clear. Will do so next time…

Believe I KNOW what physicians can be like! Turns out many of them treat their colleagues poorly as well….hope things are going well for you and you have good providers!

T Allen's avatar

Sorry to hear that but I'm not surprised. Thank you for being "aware" and following YLE. I know she is helping to encourage people think and act differently. :-) I have 2 good PCPs now, thank goodness. It's the "specialists" that drive me crazy but I'm winding my way through the list slowly. That's where the online Dr bios and reviews are helpful. At least I have an idea of what I may be walking into during an initial appt. ;-)

Fantastic! Congratulations! And thank you for the vision of how to move forward. We do live in a different world. Change is hard and can take time, but glad you and your colleagues are working hard to create positive change. Thank you

Congratulations! Finally some good news! When I heard about the initiative I was hoping they would tap you to join. Question: will the primary focus be limited to California (I hope not) or will it be national (with a CDC-like role)? I look forward to brighter days ahead.

You GO girl! Thank you.

Awesome! I am fortunate to be a Californian.Thank You for ALL you and your team do.

Judith Berghuis's avatar

You are a treasure! I love what you've created in California and I hope the New England states will continue to band together and work with you. We need clear and accurate information coming from public health resources and apparently the only way we will get it is through groups like yours. Thank you for your willingness to create sanity in this climate of chaos!

what I've noticed in the last few years is the increase in communication coming from most medical services, being 83 I see alot of them. Some still have a ways to go to catch up, but it is improving

Kim stephens's avatar

Love your comments on how to communicate better with people who have different views! I’m sending it to my adult children. Thank you for the amazing work you do!

I have never had an issue with trusting the CDC or NIH, and have always followed their recommendations. Maybe I've been able to do that because I've had some medical education that most people don't have. I'm thinking that the new YLE project which starts with listening to people will help others to get good medical education, with the understanding of what's at stake if we don't go along with vaccinations and wearing masks.

I would love for our health department to join this if we could, but I'm not sure we could make any obstructions from a county level. This is amazing!

Katelyn Jetelina's avatar

What health department/state are you in?

Andrew Lam, MPH's avatar

*Contributions (darn autocorrect!)

I'm in a unique situation. I'm with Bastrop County in Texas and we're the first health department to be established (2023) in the state in over 30 years. It's been an amazing opportunity to help build the department.

Katelyn Jetelina's avatar

That's incredible. I think you can make strides, more so than state and federal at a county level. The challenge, as you know, is capacity and resources. Happy to brainstorm with your Department if helpful!

Andrew Lam, MPH's avatar

That would be awesome! Should I reach out to your colleague Celeste to look at setting something up?

Celeste LeCompte's avatar

Yes! Looking forward to chatting.
