Thank you for modeling for the wider world, the gift and skill of a humble self correction when it is necessary. With luck someone who didn't know it was alright to do that will learn from your example.
As a fellow toddler mom, a person who related deeply when you posted the pic of your laptop beside the baby in the tub, and someone who is SO grateful for your work, I have several times thought, "if she lived anywhere near me, I'd be gifting her some wine in appreciation."
Agree it was disappointing. Apparently they relied on the data from Israel. “ Another Israeli scientist walked the panel through a new study of health records of more than 1.1. million people over age 60. It found that at least 12 days after the booster, the rates of severe disease were nearly twentyfold lower among those who received a third Pfizer shot compared to those who did not.” (NYTimes - I’m having trouble pasting the link)
Thank you for all the info!!! I hope they follow through with the recommendations for healthcare workers. Most of us taking care of Covid patients are anxious to get one. At least now I can sigh a half a breath of relief (I’ll hold the other half until it’s decided) 😭
Thank you for all that you do! Why is there mainly two camps in the we need boosters now or not right now? I am asking from a science point as someone WHO HAS BIG ANXIETY when it comes to this virus. I thought we knew that we don't have the best system for tracking our breakthrough/severity and that Israel and the UK do. What are we not seeing?
Did they define "high risk" for the purposes of getting a booster? Are obesity or diabetes or other common chronic conditions that seem to exacerbate COVID included?
What's going on with the Janssen vaccines? That's what I got, and I can't help but feel like I'm completely in the dark in long terms of efficacy vs covid variants. I need to travel to the South this year, and I don't know what to expect with Delta raging.
But only Pfizer, not Moderna or Jansen. ACIP has yet to review the data and make a recommendation. So frustrating that Biden didn’t allow the usual process. We desperately need clear consistent public health messaging. This kind of tension contributes to vaccine hesitancy in so many ways.
PS I was stunned to see the headlines, too,.After just reading they didn’t approve to read approved shook my brain.
To resolve the prioritization problem gracefully, there should be a system where everyone gets to schedule their first, second or third doses as desired, but with the caveat that if someone with a higher priority comes along and wants your spot, you can get bumped and rescheduled with 48 hours notice.
My apologies would you clarify how the FDA and CDC work in cooperation to set this guidelines and implement them? I thought once the FDA set the criteria then it was a done deal. I'd like to understand this as clearly as I possibly can to help others around me also grasp this information. Thank you so much for all your efforts.
yes it’s super confusing. once the FDA makes a decision, it gets punted to the ACIP which advices the CDC. The FDA determines if it’s safe and effective. The ACIP determines the policy (who should get one, global equity, etc). that decision will be next week
I am happy to hear about the second vote. Are they just voting on giving a Pfizer 3rd dose or does this include Moderna as well? If this is just for Pfizer, will those people that the second vote include, who received Moderna first, be eligible for a 3rd dose of Pfizer?
Do we know what falls under "high risk" group? While 18 months I think I should know but I ask, as that has changed over time and seemed to differ by state. For instance for eary vaccine rollout, we had tiers of risk (diabetes, hypertension, COPD...) then being a former smoker was added in some states later.
Ha! Well done coming back to us with an update before your much deserved glass of wine ... you are so very appreciated YLE!!! Thank You!

This is really disappointing. It seems like they pulled the age for the cutoff out of thin air.

I need a drink too. Keep up the fight Dr Jetelina! Take the weekend off though and hug your family. You're truly an inspiration.

not yet. this is the job of the ACIP next week

hope today’s post helped clear this up a bit

If I received the Pfizer series, wouldn't I want the Moderna booster since it appears to be a stronger dose?
For that matter, if one had a choice, Moderna with its higher dose, would seem to have the edge on Pfizer. Yes, no?
