50% is a huge number. Unless someone's behavior is obviously "off" such that an untrained individual can determine something just isn't right, how is this data point determined? How can someone be determined to have a mental illness without a diagnosis?

I have an undiagnosed mental illness...I read scientific papers for fun 😂 The best part is that if I read your papers and I have questions, I know where to find you 😎 Paywalls suck. I hope you can post your own research into a "subscribers only" section that won't ruffle any of the publisher's feathers.
A quick search and the highest number I can find is about 25% of officers experiencing some symptoms of mental illness, between 7% and 20% with PTSD. 50% is a bombshell claim and needs documentation. I do see lots of postings claiming up to 50% of those shot by police likely suffering from mental illness. I am very happy to see violence looked at from a dispassionate, epidemiological standpoint but wondering about the accuracy of the numbers you put out without citing studies. I see that you got threatened and are pulling back a bit and understand that data that does not agree with strongly held beliefs is likely to induce this, so I would suggest backing-up your numbers with links to the studies to defuse those reactions. That said, I think it's important to get the correct numbers out there, so I hope that you will feel safe enough to continue this discussion soon.
