Well, maybe there's hope for all of us yet. The pandemic brought out the worst in us, but it also brought out the best. The center holds, the good prevails, and we all live on, for the sake,. If nothing else, the children.

Our youngest got his first Moderna yesterday. He was so proud and excited! For all you parents of littles getting vaccinated now, please don't forget to register your kiddos on VSAFE as soon as they get their first doses! Let's all keep supporting science!

What are your thoughts on delaying the 2nd Moderna dose? My understanding is that an 8 week interval is recommended for the Pfizer vaccine for kids 12 and up to increase antibody response as well as to decrease the risk of myocarditis. I have a 4 year old son that was vaccinated with Moderna last week and am considering waiting the 8 weeks, even though of course I want him fully vaccinated asap. It seems like going with what might give him the best protection for the long haul makes some sense. I would appreciate any insight you might have into this. Thank you for all of your work in distilling this information down into a easy to digest and share format.

Our 2 yo granddaughter received her first dose yesterday; her parents and grandparents are so happy; she was so excited to see others her own age at the peds clinic, too.

Grandson age 4 and granddaughter, just 13 months, both got their first doses yesterday. Sadly, there have been almost no vaccines for kids available in Mississippi and the grandchildren there have not been able to be vaccinated yet (they are 8 and 5). Wish the distribution of vaccines were more equitable.

Congratulations!

Our 10 yo son participated in the Moderna KidCove clinical trial starting late August '21. No side effects occurred from either of the two 25 mcg doses. When the Pfizer vaccine was approved for his age group in fall '21, he was "unblinded" and we learned he was in the vaccinated group. Since vaccination, he was a close contact several times as school and once with a family member, but he never developed symptoms and did not test positive.

(BTW, he was recently boosted with Pfizer 10mcg b/c that is the only booster available for his age group and we wanted him boosted before summer camp).

First, thank you so much for all you do!

I know you cannot give individual level advice, but was hoping you might have thoughts on this more generally…

We have been eagerly awaiting this vaccine for our 20 month old (our 5 yr old is vaxxed and boosted). While I know it isn’t pure magic that will necessarily prevent infection, we have been so incredibly careful and were hoping the protection it provides around serious outcomes would allow us a little more normalcy and peace of mind.

The woman who administered her Moderna vaccine this AM did not have a firm hold and my daughter jerked her leg. Some of the vaccine was on me, some still left in the syringe. Her leg honestly looks more to me like a superficial needle scratch than an actual injection was made. She also usually takes quite a long time to calm after vaccines and she became calm almost immediately after this happened.

There is no way to know how much, if any!, made it in her. I called her peds office and they, understandably, recommended against another dose (the site administering it offered).

Any thoughts? How is this handled with other pediatric vaccines? Do you know of antibody tests that can be done to see if there is a response (I know we would need to wait a few weeks), or are those all targeted at detecting antibodies resulting from an actual infection? I’m heartbroken.

Any advice is so greatly appreciated!

I’m not sure these genuine words of affirmation will touch the hearts of these many scientists who did the work of vaccine development. The successful working together is the likely love language that resonates with them and brings personal satisfaction. But how good of you Dr J to express these heart felt messages. If only our whole society would do the same for each other.
