I’m back! And it was an unbelievable vacation. Thank you for all the book recommendations; I have enough to last a lifetime. (I’ve started with Recoding America and An Immense World, with many more ordered!)
Time to jump back in. A few housekeeping things:
Frequency. Expect two emails a week from YLE. This newsletter can’t possibly keep up with everything in public health (maybe one day), but I will do my best to keep a few essential storylines. To limit your emails to a specific topic, select your preferences in your settings HERE.
Questions. 90% of the content from this newsletter is generated by questions from you. Please comment on posts or send me your questions! Reply to any YLE email or send a message directly to yourlocalepidemiologist@gmail.com. I cannot reply to all messages, but I do read them. Please keep emails short—I won’t read more than a few sentences.
Death threats. While on vacay, I appeared on a particular news network in an unpleasant light, resulting in many “love letters” (i.e., death threats), becoming buddy’s with the local police department, and an uptick in subscriptions. If you’re new and here in good faith, then welcome! I’m so glad you’re here, and I look forward to hearing your perspective (see bullet #2 above). But death threats (and bullying and microaggression) are not tolerated. Period. I have open legal cases in two states and am adding names quickly.
Archive. Access to previous content can be found here. There is a fantastic search option if needed. The archive used to be limited to paid subscribers, but it became a pain. It’s now open to all.
Support. Many of you continue to support this publication financially. You may not know it, but your support ensures:
Science (i.e. YLE content) remains freely accessible and available to all.
YLE remains impermeable to external pressures.
YLE remains sustainable by growing an incredible internal team.
I have a space to think bigger and better about systematically improving scientific communication in public health. (I’m working on some really exciting plans—stay tuned.)
Without your support, this wouldn’t happen. So, a HUGE thank you. (For those who don’t want a subscription, I have a GoFundMe here for one-time donations.)
Okay, that’s it. Now, buckle up! We’re headed into the respiratory season, and there’s a lot to cover.
Love, YLE

Thank you so much for all that you do! I'm glad you are taking a hard line with threats. That cannot and should never be tolerated!
